Joe Webb creates collages using found imagery to make politically charged artwork. His work explores climate change, world hunger, inequality and war. I saw Stirring up a storm and it was of a whisk mixing the atmosphere/ earth and it made me want to explore this further as my object is a whisk. After researching Joe Webb after seeing Stirring up a storm and realising he is a collage artist I thought this fitted in perfectly with the idea of combing images and making collages like I've mentioned in previous posts the idea of a whisk combining ingredients. I really liked how he creates a powerful message through this imagery and he even uses characters from a different era (50's) to expose the modern day problems.
I wanted to explore the idea of deforestation and the water shortage and contamination in Africa. The top image is a 1950's family reading books and maps and I thought that maybe they could be reading about the amazon rain forest for example (using paper made from trees in the books) and then placed that image over an image of an area of deforestation to show the reality of what it is becoming.
The Middle image explores the idea of the use of water in different countries and how poorer countries struggle to find and drink water and when they do it's often contaminated. I found an image of a 1950's family playing in the garden, getting the paddling pool ready and I wanted to put that in front of an image that shows a person struggling to find water. It portrays the wastefulness of how we use water and how they use water. I really like how the children are almost running past the girl with a paddling pool and how the father figure is staring at her whilst using the hose.
The final image is again a 1950's style but a woman with a hoover. I thought it would be interesting to see her hoovering the trees up again exploring deforestation. This hoovering image was inspired by Joe Webb's star dust pieces. I thought about how rapid and almost a common occurrence of deforestation is and linked it to a common everyday household activity like hoovering could be compared to.
